What is an Availability Zone, and why do AWS architectures commonly span multiple Availability Zones?
BeginnerAnswer
An Availability Zone is one or more discrete, physically separate data centers within an AWS Region, each with independent power, cooling, and networking, and architectures commonly span multiple Availability Zones within a region so that if one entire data center experiences an outage, the application continues running using resources in the remaining healthy Availability Zones, providing high availability without needing to operate across entirely different geographic regions.
aws ec2 describe-availability-zones --region us-east-1Real-world example A company runs its web application's EC2 instances across three separate Availability Zones within the same region, ensuring that a power outage affecting a single data center does not take down the entire application for its users.
