What are Route 53 health checks, and how do they support failover routing?

Intermediate

Answer

Route 53 health checks continuously monitor the health of a specified endpoint, such as an application server or load balancer, by sending periodic requests and evaluating the response, and when combined with failover routing policy, Route 53 automatically stops sending traffic to an unhealthy primary resource and redirects it to a designated secondary resource instead, providing automated disaster recovery at the DNS level.
aws route53 create-health-check --caller-reference 2026-09-07 --health-check-config IPAddress=192.0.2.1,Port=80,Type=HTTP,ResourcePath=/health
Real-world example An e commerce platform configures a Route 53 health check against its primary region's load balancer, so if that region ever becomes unresponsive, DNS traffic automatically fails over to a secondary standby region without any manual intervention.
